Estimation of Lead concentration in Settled Dust at Gharian City, Libya

This paper represents a detailed study for dust deposition impacted by emissions of lead from vehicles fuel as an essential step for mitigation of environmental pollution problems. Gharian, is one of the main cities of Libya, has thousands of cars traveling along its roads. The levels of lead in settled dust samples collected near small streets, main streets and gas stations in Gharian city have been determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometey. Each value of lead concentration represents an average of six individual readings (n = 24) for small streets, (n = 132) for main streets and (n = 42) for gas stations. The overall mean values observed were 417, 797and553 µg/g for the above locations respectively. The overall main concentration for main streets was significantly higher (p<0.05) than for other site. The standard deviation, S.D and coefficient of variation, C.V of small streets was found to be less than of main streets and gas stations, due to its lower dispersion data from the mean. The data were also compared with those reported in the literature for other cities.
