Pedological Evaluation and Land Capability Classification of Floodplain Soils of Jootar Northcentral, Nigeria
Abstract
The study was carried out to characterize and classify the floodplain soils of Jootar in Benue state North central, Nigeria. Free survey technique was used to cite three pedons at the study site. The pedons were described and sampled base on the horizon differentiation for laboratory analysis. The horizons have different colours in each of the pedons. The textural class of the soil was mostly sand, sandy loam, and loamy sand. The percent sand ranged from 72 – 94 % at pedon 1, 66 - 68 % at pedon 2 and 64 - 86 % at pedon 3. Soil pH had a mean of 6.88 in pedon 1, 6.40 in pedon 2 and 6.82 in pedon 3. Organic carbon had a mean range of 0.85 - 1.12 % among the pedons. Base saturation had a mean of 70.15 % in pedon 1, 73.80 % in pedon 2, and 82.67 % in pedon 3. The soils were classified according to USDA keys to soil taxonomy and correlated with world reference base as Fluventic Haplustepts (Fluvic Cambisols) in pedons 1 and 3, while pedon 2 was classified as Typic Haplustepts (Eutric Cambisols). The study site has a profile development of A-C horizons and slight flood. Hence, the soils were also classified as class III using land capability classification.
