Non Destructive Investigation of disbonding damage in air cooling inlet composite panel using active thermography and shearography

The international NDT community of the aeronautical sector is to improve the airworthiness of aircraft components designed to perform for decades. In this context, this experimental work is to deliver some technical achievements related to the applicability of imaging NDT methods, i.e. thermography and shearography at recognizing the presence of damaged regions across vulnerable surfaces of a Typhoon air-cooling inlet composite panel. According to Italian Air Force NDT procedures, the experimental evidences indicate that Optical Thermography (OLT) techniques are for a fast screening of vehicle outer composite surface and moreover that the use of Sonic Infrared (SIR) is to provide both recognition and semi-quantitative assessment of disbonding area, whose evaluation is comparable to those attained by visual inspection and UT technique. Afterwards, Shearography measurements, performed by both dynamic and thermal loading approach, were executed very rapidly to be applicable, in combination to thermography and classical NDT methods, either for laboratory and/or for full field inspection of aeronautical composite components.
